Artist Statement:

In this series, my work expresses some of the trauma therefore social issues that we immigrants not just Latinx Latinos deal with in this country. Also, it aims with my approach at creating inclusion for Latinx Latinos by trying to introduce the adjective Noleño Noleña Noleñx to the local lexicon and hopefully turn it into a dictionary entry. Promoting the growth of inclusion and cultural identity and what that may mean for each one of us. Noleño: adj. used to describe a person from New Orleans.

William Roberto Ascencio “Bocho”

Born 1982 San Salvador, El Salvador. Spent Summers in Nola with grandparents since 1987. Migrated with family in 1999 to Nola.

Family interest seemed to dictate I should just get job or be an auto mechanic, which I did not do well and it never fulfilled my needs to express myself. The arts are the medium of my purpose, of life my obsession and my medicine. In 1985 when I was 3 years old, I looked at my “mami” and said I want to be an artist. So, I am.
